Outlet not working? Check the GFCI in the other room first

A dead outlet feels like a wiring failure and usually is not. The overwhelming majority of them come down to a tripped GFCI in a completely different room, a breaker that quietly opened, or a switch nobody realised controlled that receptacle. Five minutes of checking, in the right order, solves most of them.

Safety first. Everything below is done with the cover plates on. Do not open outlets or switches, and do not remove the panel cover. The wiring behind a receptacle can remain live even with its own breaker off, and a mistake here is not a mistake you get to learn from. If the checks below do not resolve it, that is the point at which an electrician is genuinely the cheap option.

The checks, in order

  1. Confirm it is the outlet

    Plug in something you know works — a lamp, a phone charger with a light. Try both sockets on the receptacle. It is a small step and it rules out the single most annoying outcome, which is troubleshooting an electrical system to discover the appliance was broken.

  2. Find every GFCI in the house

    These are the receptacles with test and reset buttons. Check bathrooms, the kitchen counter, the garage, outdoor receptacles, the basement, and near any laundry or utility sink. Press reset firmly on each one and listen for the click. A single GFCI protects every ordinary outlet wired downstream of it, and builders route circuits in ways that make no intuitive sense from inside the rooms.

  3. Check for a wall switch

    In many homes one socket of a receptacle — often the top one — is controlled by a wall switch intended for a lamp. Flip every switch in the room, including the ones that appear to do nothing. That is frequently exactly what they do.

  4. Cycle the breaker properly

    At the panel, look for a breaker sitting slightly off from its neighbours or in a middle position. A tripped breaker does not always look obviously tripped. To reset one, push it firmly all the way to off first, then back to on. Flipping it partway does nothing.

  5. Check the AFCI breakers too

    Newer panels may include arc-fault breakers, which have a test button on the breaker itself. These trip on arcing conditions and are reset the same way — fully off, then on.

What it means when it trips again

A GFCI that will not stay reset is doing its job. It is detecting current going somewhere it should not, and that path could be a person. The usual cause is a faulty appliance on the circuit, or moisture in an outdoor or bathroom receptacle. Unplug everything on the circuit and reset again. If it holds, plug items back one at a time until it trips — you have found your bad appliance. If it will not hold with nothing plugged in, that is an electrician’s call.

A breaker that trips repeatedly is a different message: too much load, a short, or a ground fault. Space heaters, hair dryers, and window air conditioners on shared circuits are frequent causes of simple overload. But repeated tripping with normal load is a fault, and repeatedly resetting it is overriding the exact device installed to prevent a fire.

Stop and call immediately if

Any outlet or switch plate is warm to the touch. Any discolouration, scorching, or melted plastic. A buzzing or crackling sound from a receptacle, switch, or the panel. A burning smell, even faintly, even intermittently. Lights that dim or brighten as large appliances cycle. Or a mild shock or tingle from an appliance or a faucet — that last one indicates a fault that can be lethal and is not something to observe for a few days.

Almost no panel is labelled correctly, and almost every homeowner needs it labelled at the worst possible moment. Take an afternoon with a helper and a phone: turn off one breaker at a time and walk the house identifying what went dark. Write it on the panel directory properly, not in pencil abbreviations only you can read.

While you do it, note which outlets are GFCI-protected but are not themselves GFCIs — those are the ones that will confuse you a year from now.
