Furnace not turning on: the safe checks, in order
It is the first genuinely cold night, you turn the thermostat up, and nothing happens. Before you pay emergency rates, there are six checks worth making — several of which are the actual cause more often than anyone likes to admit. The thermostat, properly
Set to heat, not auto or off. Setpoint several degrees above current room temperature. Fresh batteries — a thermostat with weak batteries can show a normal display and still fail to close the circuit. If it is a smart thermostat, confirm it has not silently dropped into an away or eco schedule, and that it is actually powered rather than running on a dying backup.
The furnace power switch
There is almost always an ordinary-looking light switch on or beside the furnace, often at the top of the basement stairs. It gets flipped by people carrying laundry, by electricians, by children. Check it, then check the furnace’s breaker in the panel.
The access panel
Furnaces have a door safety switch that cuts power when the blower compartment panel is removed, so the unit cannot run with the cabinet open. If someone changed a filter and did not seat the panel firmly, the furnace will do absolutely nothing. Push it flat and make sure it clicks home.
The filter
A filter clogged enough to restrict airflow lets heat build up in the heat exchanger, and the high-limit switch shuts the burner down to protect it. Confirm other gas appliances work — a stove burner is the fastest test. The condensate drain, on high-efficiency units
A condensing furnace — the kind with white PVC exhaust pipes rather than metal — produces acidic condensate that has to drain away. When that line or its trap clogs, a float switch shuts the furnace off deliberately. Look for standing water in a small tube or pan near the base of the unit.
Read the code before you call
Nearly every furnace built in the last few decades has an LED on the control board, visible through a small sight glass in the access panel, that flashes a fault code. Inside the panel there is usually a printed legend translating those patterns — three flashes means one thing, four means another.
