“Change it every ninety days” is printed on a lot of boxes, and it is roughly right for roughly nobody. The correct interval depends on how thick the filter is, what is in your air, and how much your system actually runs. Start with thickness
A one-inch filter has very little surface area, so it loads up quickly. These are commonly changed somewhere in the one-to-three-month range. A four- or five-inch media cabinet filter has far more pleated surface, and manufacturers frequently rate them for six to twelve months. If you have been changing a five-inch media filter every ninety days, you have been spending money for no reason. If you have been changing a one-inch filter twice a year, your system has been working harder than it needed to for most of that time.
Cheap fiberglass panel filters are a separate case. They exist to keep large debris out of the blower, not to clean your air, and they load and bypass quickly.
Then adjust for the house
